Maayka | Laal Patchwork Full Sleeve Shirt

some things leave home with you. even when you don't realise it.

maayka comes from that strange feeling of carrying pieces of somewhere you've belonged. a little fabric, a little colour, something familiar that you can't quite place anymore. except sometimes, what we carry isn't always something we chose to bring along.

while making her, i kept thinking about the story of shiva drinking the halahala. all that poison entering him, but instead of letting it spread through his body, he holds it in his throat and idk, there's something very intriguing about that. how much shit can a person take from the world and still somehow not let it reach the heart? maybe that's what maayka became.

the shirt is almost like her body, carrying evidence of everything else. the laal stays almost untouched at the centre, while fragments of colourful geometric textiles attach themselves across the chest and sleeves. almost like the world keeps leaving things on you, whether you asked for them or not.

and i didn't want those patches to have clean edges either. the red threads needed to escape, because healing or growing or whatever we call it never really looks as neat as we pretend it does.

then there are these tiny jhumkas hanging right over her heart. something delicate still sitting inside, despite everything.

and on the back, there's barely anything except a small red outline with a thread running out of it. almost like an unfinished thought, because maybe she's still trying to figure it out.

and perhaps that's what maayka means here. not necessarily a place you return to, but something within you that the world hasn't managed to take away.

not about men wearing something feminine or women wearing something made about them. just all of us carrying a little reminder of what a woman goes through, what she still holds onto, and everything she fucking deserves despite it.
